What Else Is Lemon Balm Good For?
Lemon balm is also good at cleansing the skin. It is anti-inflammatory and antibacterial and good for acne prone, oily and sensitive skin.
I love lemon balm in my lip balm
A few years ago, my lips were a mess—cracked and dry from March winds. Store-bought balms failed me. Then I remembered the lemon balm growing in my backyard. I’d been sipping it in tea to unwind, but what if I blended it with oils for my lips?
I melted some beeswax, stirred in coconut oil, and infused it with crushed lemon balm leaves. Twenty minutes later, I had a little pot of balm that smelled like spring and felt like silk. I also love to add strawberry mint with lemon balm and the smell is lovely.
My lips stayed soft all day, even in that brutal wind. No more cracks, no greasy mess—just smooth, happy skin. Plus, knowing it was all natural, from my own hands, felt empowering. Lemon balm didn’t just heal; it brought a little calm to my chaos.
If your lips are battling dry spells or you’re tired of balms that don’t deliver, crafting your own with herbs like lemon balm is the fix. It’s quick, it’s yours, and it works better than anything from a tube.

Why Lemon Balm Rocks for Lip Care
Soothes Inflammation and Irritation
How: Lemon balm is rich in rosmarinic acid, a compound with anti-inflammatory powers.
Lip Benefit: It calms chapped, windburned, or cracked lips fast—think of it as a natural hush for that sting you feel in dry weather.
DIY Angle: Infuse it into a balm, and it’s like a rescue mission for irritated lips.
Fights Viruses (Hello, Cold Sores)
How: It’s got antiviral properties, thanks to polyphenols like caffeic acid, which studies show can tackle herpes simplex virus (the cold sore culprit).
Lip Benefit: If your lips are prone to cold sores—especially in stressful or windy March—it can help prevent or speed healing.
DIY Angle: A lemon balm-infused oil in your lip recipe doubles as subtle armor.
Moisturizes Without Greasiness
How: While lemon balm itself isn’t an oil, its extract pairs beautifully with carrier oils (like coconut or sweet almond) to lock in moisture.
Lip Benefit: It helps your balm hydrate dry lips without that heavy, sticky feel of synthetic stuff—softness that lasts.
DIY Angle: Blend it with beeswax, and you’ve got a lightweight, effective shield.
Antioxidant Boost for Protection
How: Loaded with flavonoids and phenolic compounds, it fights free radicals from sun or pollution.
Lip Benefit: Lips don’t have much natural defense—lemon balm adds a layer of care to keep them from aging or cracking under stress.
DIY Angle: It’s your secret weapon for a balm that doesn’t just sit there but actively protects.
Calming Scent and Vibe
How: Its mild, lemony-mint aroma comes from essential oils like citral and citronellal.
Lip Benefit: Every swipe feels uplifting—great for your self-care crowd who love a mood boost with their skincare.
DIY Angle: Even a small infusion adds a fresh, natural scent—no fake fragrances needed.
