I’ve been having podcast issues this week and wasn’t able to upload one. So, I decided to do something a little different this week and talk about what does it mean exactly to have “mature” skin.
As we grow older, our skin begins to tell a different story. A story of wisdom, change, and transformation. But what is mature skin, exactly?
Having mature skin isn’t just about your age. It’s about how our skin changes over time. The phrase “mature skin” usually means around age 40, but it varies. Signs of mature skin are fine lines, dryness, sagging, or dull skin.
Mature skin is typically thinner, drier, and less elastic. A person with mature skin may have fine lines around the eyes and mouth, deeper expression lines, a loss of firmness, or areas of uneven skin tone. Your skin might feel more delicate or react more strongly to products that once worked well. This is all completely normal.
You might notice:
- Fine lines and deeper wrinkles
- Thinning or sagging skin
- Dryness or dullness
- Age spots or uneven tone
- Slower healing or increased sensitivity
These changes are because of slower cell turnover, decreased collagen and elastin production, and changes in hydration and oil levels. Hormones (especially during and after menopause) play a significant role, too.
But here’s the beautiful part: mature skin has needs, not flaws.
🛁 What Mature Skin Needs Most
Mature skin needs hydration, nourishment, and gentle protection. (My next podcast will be about this subject when I’m able to do it) It’s not about chasing youth or trying to look 20 years younger. It’s about enhancing your skin’s natural beauty with kindness and consistency.
DIY skincare is a beautiful, fun, and fulfilling way to meet your skin’s needs. When you create your own skincare products, you can make them to help your skin’s unique problems using botanical ingredients that help support your skin and are soothing.
And when we meet those needs with gentle, nourishing care—especially with handmade, botanical infused skincare, it responds beautifully.
That’s why I create and teach simple, sensory-rich skincare rituals that celebrate mature skin instead of trying to “fix” it. I want it to not only help your skin, but make you feel wonderful putting it on, like you’re pampering yourself every day.
In future posts, we’ll explore what this means for your daily routine: hydration, oils, serums, self-massage, and more.
🌸Natural Oils for Mature Skin
Here are some of beneficial oils that I use in my handmade products and skincare rituals:
🌹 Rosehip Seed Oil
High in vitamin A (a natural retinol), rosehip helps brighten and smooth the skin while encouraging cell regeneration. It’s especially helpful for fine lines and uneven tone.
🥄 Argan Oil
This golden oil is full of vitamin E and antioxidants. It’s lightweight, easily absorbed, and helps soften and protect skin without clogging pores.
🍊 Pomegranate Seed Oil
A deeply regenerative oil that promotes skin elasticity and repair. It’s perfect for dry, thinning, or sun-damaged skin.
🌾 Jojoba Oil
Technically a wax, jojoba closely mimics the skin’s natural sebum. It balances and nourishes all skin types, including mature and sensitive skin.
🍑 Sea Buckthorn Oil
Bright orange and rich in beta-carotene, this oil is a powerhouse for aging skin. It promotes repair, reduces inflammation, and brings back a healthy glow.
🌙 Ways to Use Oils in Your Skincare Routine
- Facial oil: Apply 3–5 drops to damp skin after cleansing and toning.
- Serum blend: Mix oils with essential oils (like frankincense or lavender) for targeted care.
- Night balm: Blend oils with butters and beeswax for deeper overnight nourishment.
- Facial massage: Use oils for daily massage to stimulate circulation and firmness.
Mature skin tells a story of strength, joy, and experience. It deserves care that is just as thoughtful. You don’t need harsh treatments or expensive products—just real, honest ingredients and a little daily ritual.
When you treat your skin with kindness, it shows.
