Micellar Water

Can you make your own micellar water? Is it an effective cleanser?

Yes, you can make your own micellar water at home with simple ingredients! Micellar water is a gentle cleanser that uses micelles—tiny oil molecules suspended in water—to attract and remove dirt, oil, and makeup without stripping the skin. It’s particularly effective for mature skin because it cleanses without harsh rubbing or drying out the skin. Below, I’ll provide a DIY recipe and explain its effectiveness.

DIY Micellar Water Recipe

Ingredients:

4 ounces (120 ml) distilled water (pure and free of impurities)

1 teaspoon rosehip oil (nourishing and lightweight)

1 teaspoon liquid castile soap (mild surfactant to form micelles)

5-10 drops of vitamin E oil (antioxidant boost for mature skin)

Optional: 1 teaspoon rose water (for a soothing scent and extra hydration or you could replace all the distilled water with rosewater.)

Instructions:

Pour the distilled water into a clean glass bottle or jar.

Add the rosehip oil, castile soap, and vitamin E oil (and rose water, if using).

Shake well until the ingredients are fully combined. The mixture may look slightly cloudy—that’s normal as the micelles form.

To use, soak a cotton pad with the solution, gently swipe it over your face to remove makeup and impurities, and no rinsing is needed.

Storage: Store in a cool, dark place for up to 1 month. Shake before each use.

Is It Effective?

Yes, homemade micellar water can be an effective cleanser, especially for light makeup, daily grime, and surface oils. Here’s why:

Micelle Action: The combination of a small amount of oil (rosehip) and a surfactant (castile soap) creates micelles that trap dirt and oil, lifting them off the skin without harsh scrubbing.

Gentleness: Unlike some foaming cleansers, it doesn’t disrupt the skin’s natural barrier, making it ideal for mature skin that may be prone to dryness or sensitivity.

Hydration: Ingredients like rosehip oil and vitamin E add moisture and antioxidants, which support aging skin’s needs.

However, it has limitations:

Heavy Makeup: It may not fully remove waterproof mascara or heavy foundation as well as commercial micellar waters with stronger surfactants. You might need a double cleanse with an oil-based cleanser for stubborn products.

Customization: Store-bought versions are formulated for stability and broad efficacy, while homemade versions depend on your ingredient ratios and quality.

For mature skin, this DIY version is a solid option for daily cleansing or as a first step in a routine, especially if you prefer natural, gentle products.

I'd love to know....

Reply to this email and tell me... Have you tried micellar water before, or is there a specific skin concern you’re targeting?

Let’s make space for radiance—even in the busiest seasons.

Warmly,
Carrie 🌸
